USA 2007 | Run time: 87 min. | Director: Todd Peters
BC Premiere
When aspiring filmmaker Todd looks for inspiration, he turns to Eastern European filmmaker Ivan Libragi and his many filmmaking how-to books. Todd soon decides to make a film, and hires Ivan to film a documentary about the making of an independent film in America today. Ivan and his crew follow Todd and his crew through the filmmaking process. Todd’s flawed hiring process is shown through a series of hilarious encounters with barely-competent crewmembers. Soon, heartache, firings, family drama, abandonment and apathy set in to destroy the film Todd set out to make, while creating a new work of art and opening doors for all of the crew members.
This remarkably adept mockumentary on the filmmaking process features a terrific ensemble cast that emulates the dynamics of many typical low budget independent films; anyone who has been on such a film crew or set will recognize these characters very clearly. With a running commentary by the jaded Ivan Libragi, who rejoices in ripping Todd’s film apart, Let Others Suffer offers a wonderful depiction of the near-impossibility of getting a low budget indie made today.
